The right social media management tool depends mostly on three things: how the vendor charges (per user, channel, brand or workspace), which plan includes approvals, and where your data is stored. Free plans exist at Buffer, Metricool, Fanpage Karma, Publer and Planable, each with clear limits. For an English-speaking team in the DACH region, the interface language is a fourth question worth asking.

A social media management tool is software that lets you plan and publish posts for several networks, answer comments and messages as a team, and report on the results. This page compares social media management tools on documented facts: networks, approvals, inbox, reporting, data protection and price. The table above is sorted by those facts alone. Below you find what to look for, which tools suit agencies and data-sensitive teams, and where a free plan exists. All prices and features were checked on vendor pages in October 2026.
A social media management tool brings the daily work on company profiles into one interface: scheduling posts, answering comments and direct messages, measuring and reporting. Most tools split this into four modules: publishing with a content calendar, an inbox, analytics, and team management with roles. Some go further. Adhook also runs ad campaigns for social ads and Google Ads, according to the vendor, and Facelift and Lomavis have their own products for employee advocacy (Amplify and Share).
Monitoring is a separate job. It listens to what others write about your brand outside your own profiles. Some management tools sell a module for it, many have none: Buffer lists social listening as “Not available” in its own comparison with Sprout Social. If listening is your main need, the social media monitoring tools ranking is the better place to start.
Pricing models decide how expensive growth gets, and vendors charge in very different ways. The examples below come from the vendors’ pricing pages in October 2026.
| Billing | Example | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Per user | Hootsuite Standard: 99 USD per user a month, billed annually | small team, many channels |
| Per channel | Buffer Essentials: 5 USD per channel a month, billed annually | few channels, many people |
| Per brand | Metricool Starter up to 5 brands: €16 a month, billed annually | several brands, small budget |
| Per workspace | Planable Basic: 33 USD per workspace a month, billed annually, unlimited users | many approvers |
| Package | Swat.io Small: €39 a month with 3 channels and 2 users | fixed team size |
Team features often sit in higher plans. Approval workflows start with the Advanced plan at Hootsuite and Metricool and with Medium at Swat.io, and at Buffer they come only with the Team plan. Check networks one by one too. Later supports neither X, Bluesky nor Google Business Profile, according to its help centre, and Metricool connects X only through an add-on at 10 USD a month per account.
A German interface matters even in an English-speaking team, because the people who approve posts in other departments or at a client may work in German. Agorapulse, Hootsuite, Metricool, Publer and Swat.io let you switch the interface to German. Later does so on desktop, while its mobile apps are English only. Among the vendors from the DACH region, Facelift, Fanpage Karma, Lomavis and SocialHub document a German interface as well.
Buffer’s web app and iOS app are English only, according to its help centre; the Android app is available in German from version 9.4.0. Sprout Social’s help centre lists English, Spanish, French, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese, with no German.
German-language support is documented far less often than a German interface. If your colleagues will contact support, ask about the support language during the trial.
Social media tools for agencies need three things: separate brands or clients, approvals by clients, and reports that go out automatically. These three points define the “Agencies” group in the cards above; the rule is on the methodology page.
The pricing model shapes the fit. Metricool charges by number of brands and includes unlimited team members from Advanced. Planable charges per workspace with unlimited users, which helps when many people approve on the client side. Fanpage Karma includes unlimited brands and profiles in Professional for €29 a month billed annually, but its editorial workflows cost €9 per brand extra.
External approvals need a closer look. Fanpage Karma names approvals by internal or external people. SocialHub has email approval for external reviewers in its Enterprise package, Sprout Social allows external approvers only in Advanced, and Swat.io only in its Custom and Agency plans. For reports, Publer sends analytics PDFs weekly or monthly by email, and Hootsuite schedules reports from Professional.
For a GDPR-sensitive team, a tool fits best when the vendor signs a data processing agreement (DPA) and stores data in the EU. Both points are checked on the vendors’ privacy and security pages, and the way you get the DPA differs. Agorapulse countersigns it within 10 working days after a request by email, and Hootsuite provides a pre-signed version through a web form.
| Data location according to vendor | Tools |
|---|---|
| EU | Agorapulse (AWS Ireland), Facelift (Germany), Fanpage Karma (EU/EEA per DPA), Lomavis (Germany and EU), Metricool (EU servers), Publer (Frankfurt), SocialHub (Germany), Swat.io (EU) |
| Mixed | Brandwatch, DotSimple, Emplifi, Meltwater, Sprinklr |
| USA | Buffer, Hootsuite, Later, Planable, SocialPilot, Sprout Social, Vista Social |
A security certificate is an extra signal. Facelift, SocialHub and Swat.io are among the tools that name ISO 27001. Hootsuite and Sprout Social name SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 but store data in the USA, which is why both questions deserve a separate check. The provider’s seat counts as well: Publer stores data in Frankfurt but is based in Tirana, Albania. This overview is not legal advice.
Yes, several vendors have a free plan, with clear limits. For one profile or a first look that is often enough; for a team it rarely is.
Most other tools offer a time-limited trial instead: Agorapulse and Sprout Social for 30 days, Swat.io for 21 days, Hootsuite, Lomavis and SocialPilot for 14 days. Brandwatch and Meltwater offer only a demo. As soon as a second person needs to approve posts, you will almost always need a paid plan.
A social media management tool costs anything from nothing on a free plan to several hundred dollars a month per user. According to pricing pages in October 2026, Buffer starts at 5 USD per channel, Metricool at €16, Swat.io at €39 and Hootsuite at 99 USD per user (99 EUR on its German pricing page). Adhook, Brandwatch, Facelift, Meltwater, SocialHub and Sprinklr publish no prices.
The best social media management tools depend on your team. An agency with many brands needs different features from a sole trader with one Instagram profile. The ranking on this page is sorted by a score from documented facts, and the "best for" labels on the cards help you filter by use case. The methodology page shows every criterion and weight.
Most social media management tools have a shared inbox, but the plan and the networks covered differ. Agorapulse includes comments, mentions, direct messages and reviews in all plans, according to its help centre. Sprout Social and SocialPilot include their inbox from Standard, and Later's Social Inbox is a desktop-only beta from Growth. Planable and Swat.io sell the inbox as an add-on, and Publer has none.
Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube are connected by every management tool in our fact base. The differences show up with X, Bluesky, Threads and Google Business Profile. Later supports neither X, Bluesky nor Google Business Profile, and Metricool charges for X as an add-on. Check the networks you need before you sign up.
Yes. Agorapulse, Hootsuite, Metricool, Publer and Swat.io let you switch between German and English, which helps in mixed teams. Later offers German on desktop only. Buffer's web app and Sprout Social have no German interface, according to their help centres.
German-language support is documented for Adhook, DotSimple, Lomavis, SocialHub and Swat.io, according to their contact, service and pricing pages; Lomavis lists "Deutscher Support" on its pricing page. Later names English as its primary and official support language. For many international tools a German help centre exists, but German support by chat or phone is not documented, so ask during the trial.
Yes, AI help for writing posts is documented for every management tool in our fact base, but plan limits differ. Buffer and Agorapulse include it in all plans, Later from Starter with AI credits, and Sprout Social only in Professional and Advanced. If data location matters, ask which model processes your texts: Swat.io names Claude via Amazon Bedrock in AWS Frankfurt, SocialHub names Microsoft Azure GPT or OpenAI GPT.
Some management tools handle ads, to very different depths. Adhook runs Google Ads plus Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X and TikTok ads, and Metricool creates Meta Ads and Google Ads campaigns, according to their own pages. Hootsuite runs Facebook campaigns and boosts, while Sprout Social and Vista Social mainly boost posts. At Swat.io, promoting posts happens in Meta Business Suite, according to its help centre.
Most do, but the apps often do less than the web version. Buffer, Hootsuite, Sprout Social and SocialPilot document apps for iOS and Android, Sprout Social and SocialPilot in all plans. Later's apps leave out analytics and conversations, and Fanpage Karma's publish app runs only on Android, according to its FAQ. Lomavis lists approvals, calendar and analytics in its app, which helps reviewers who sign off on the go.
Single sign-on (SSO) usually sits in the most expensive tier. Hootsuite, Planable, SocialPilot and Vista Social offer it only in Enterprise, Agorapulse only in its Custom plan and Facelift in Enterprise on request, according to their pricing and help pages. Emplifi lists SSO in all tiers of its plan table, and Adhook from Professional. Later includes SSO in none of its current plans.
Yes. Swat.io and DotSimple are based in Vienna. Facelift (Hamburg), Fanpage Karma (Berlin), Lomavis (Hannover) and SocialHub (Ingolstadt) come from Germany. Adhook is based in Sursee in Switzerland. A DACH headquarters says nothing about data location, though: DotSimple, for example, has a mixed data location according to its privacy policy.
Most trials last 14 to 30 days. Agorapulse and Sprout Social give 30 days without a credit card. Swat.io gives 21 days without payment details and without automatic renewal. Hootsuite limits its trial to 10 to 20 posts a day and allows no bulk scheduling. Lomavis and SocialPilot give 14 days each.
