You want to know where people write about your brand on the web: in online media, in blogs, in forums such as Reddit and, where possible, on social media. That is what we mean by web monitoring here. The term has two meanings. Search Google for “web monitoring” and, according to Ahrefs (as of 13 October 2026), you mostly find services that check whether a website is up, plus offers for dark web monitoring. Those services belong to IT. This page covers brand monitoring tools for finding mentions, judging them and reacting in time. The list above shows tools you can use without a sales call, from the free Google Alerts to the paid listening tool with a trial. All details come from the vendors, as of October 2026.
What is web monitoring?
Web monitoring is the ongoing observation of public online sources for terms such as your brand name, your products or the names of your executives. A tool scans the sources regularly, collects new hits in a dashboard and sends you alerts. It is also called brand monitoring or online monitoring, and in German Markenmonitoring.
Technical website monitoring is a separate thing. Such services check whether your own site is reachable, how fast it loads or whether content has changed. Dark web monitoring looks for leaked login data. Both belong in the IT department, and you will not find tools for them here.
In content, web monitoring overlaps with two neighbours. Social listening analyses conversations in social networks, often with an eye on trends and audiences. Classic media monitoring adds print, radio and TV and delivers press reviews. Web monitoring sits in between: it covers the open web and, with most tools, reaches into social media. For many smaller teams it is the right entry point, because it catches most mentions and works without an annual contract with an agency.
Google Alerts is Google’s free tool and is therefore on this list itself. You create a search term at google.com/alerts and receive new hits from Google Search by email, either as they happen, at most once a day or at most once a week. As sources, the Alerts page names news, blogs, web, video, books, discussions and finance. Google does not name social networks there, and there is no setting for sentiment or reports. For users in the EEA and Switzerland, the contracting party is Google Ireland Limited in Dublin according to the privacy policy. Our guide to Google Alerts explains how to set up an alert, and the facts are in Google Alerts fact check.
If you look for a Google Alerts alternative, you usually want to close these gaps:
| Question | Google Alerts | Paid tools on this list |
|---|
| Which sources? | Google Search: news, blogs, web, video, discussions | online news, blogs, forums and social media |
| Sentiment? | no setting | sentiment documented for all |
| Look-back? | new results only | from 30 days (Brand24, YouScan, Semrush) to an archive back to 2020 (Determ) |
| Price? | free | from 29 euros a month (Awario, annual) |
Our verdict: If you want to collect press articles about your own company, Google Alerts is often enough. As soon as a team has to respond to criticism in forums or on Instagram, a paid tool pays off.
According to the vendors, all tools on this list cover online news plus blogs or forums, because that is a condition for inclusion. Social media is not a condition: Google Alerts names no social networks, and all other tools on the list cover them. They differ on Reddit, reviews and traditional media:
| Tool | Reddit | Reviews | Special feature according to vendor |
|---|
| Google Alerts | not documented | not documented | also video, books, finance |
| Awario | yes | yes, platforms not named | no offline newspapers |
| Brand24 | yes, in all plans | from the Pro plan | podcasts from the Business plan |
| BrandMentions | not documented | incl. Google Business, App Store, Tripadvisor | full-text press releases |
| Determ | yes | not documented | print, TV and radio, regional, in all plans |
| Semrush Brand Monitoring | not documented | not documented | print and broadcast as an add-on |
| YouScan | not documented | incl. App Store, Trustpilot, Booking.com | image analysis as an add-on module |
| Hootsuite | not documented | in the Enterprise plan | extended listening in the Enterprise plan |
| Landau Media | not documented | consumer portals | print, radio, TV and podcasts in the AI package |
So Reddit monitoring is documented for Awario, Brand24 and Determ. Landau Media and Determ include newspapers and broadcast in the package, Semrush Brand Monitoring as an add-on. APA-Comm, for Austrian media monitoring, is on our media monitoring page, but social media is an add-on module on request there.
According to the vendors, entry costs range from nothing (Google Alerts) to 499 a month, as of October 2026:
| Tool | Entry price according to vendor | Entry scope | Trial |
|---|
| Google Alerts | free | alerts by email | not applicable |
| Awario | 29 EUR/month annually, 49 EUR monthly | 3 topics, 30,000 mentions/month, 1 user | 7 days, no credit card |
| Semrush Brand Monitoring | 79 USD/month | 3 queries, 10,000 mentions | 7 days |
| BrandMentions | 79 USD/month annually, 99 USD quarterly | 5 keywords, 5,000 mentions/month, 1 user | 7 days |
| Hootsuite | 99 EUR per user and month, annually | 10 social accounts | 14 days, no credit card |
| Brand24 | 199 USD/month annually, 249 USD monthly | 3 keywords, 2,000 mentions/month, 1 user | 14 days, no credit card |
| Determ | 249 EUR/month annually, 299 EUR with annual commitment | 5 topics, 5,000 mentions, unlimited users | 5 days, no credit card |
| Landau Media | 299 EUR/month plus VAT | 2 keywords, 100 reports | after a 60-minute appointment |
| YouScan | 499/month annually | 3 topics, 15,000 mentions/month | 3 days |
The figures are hard to compare directly: Hootsuite charges per user, Semrush by query, Landau Media by report. Brand24 unlocks reviews and real-time data only in the Pro plan for 399 USD. So do the maths with the plan that really covers your sources.
In our fact collection, Brand24 and YouScan document sentiment for German texts. According to the Brand24 help centre, sentiment analysis processes all languages, but accuracy varies by language. YouScan lists German among the languages with automatic sentiment detection.
According to its help centre, Semrush Brand Monitoring names more than 100 languages and lets you correct sentiment by hand, and BrandMentions has multilingual sentiment from the Pro plan. Neither names German explicitly. Awario, Determ, Hootsuite and Landau Media also document sentiment without naming languages. Google Alerts has no setting for sentiment at all, so you read every hit yourself.
A German interface is documented for Google Alerts and Hootsuite, while Brand24, YouScan and Semrush Brand Monitoring have none according to the vendors. So test sentiment analysis during the trial with real German hits, including irony, customer complaints and Austrian or Swiss expressions. Only when the rating is right there is it fit for reports to management.
Where is your data stored?
A pure EU data location is currently documented for none of the tools on this list; the differences lie in the contracting party and the data processing agreement (DPA):
- Google Alerts: The contracting party in the EEA and Switzerland is Google Ireland Limited. According to its privacy policy, Google runs servers around the world and is itself the controller for Alerts; Google names no DPA for it.
- Awario: TechFusion Ltd in Nicosia (Cyprus). Data location and DPA are not documented.
- BrandMentions: GESKIMO SRL in Iași (Romania). The privacy policy names no hosting location and refers to the GDPR; it does not explicitly name a DPA offer.
- Brand24: The contracting party is Brand24 Global Inc. (USA). Processing takes place mainly in Poland according to the EU Data Act page, and on servers in the USA and Poland according to the privacy policy. The terms of service cover data processing for EU customers.
- Determ: Determ d.o.o. in Zagreb (Croatia). Hosting location and DPA are not documented.
- Semrush Brand Monitoring: Sold through Semrush Inc. (USA). Data location and DPA are not documented.
- YouScan: YouScan Limited in Nicosia; according to the privacy policy, access also from the USA and Ukraine under standard contractual clauses, a data processing addendum in the terms, ISO/IEC 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2.
- Hootsuite: AWS data centres in the USA, data processing addendum with standard contractual clauses.
- Landau Media (Berlin) publishes neither server location nor DPA.
This is not legal advice. Have your data protection officer review the contract and DPA.
A tool appears here if, according to our fact collection, four conditions are met. Online news plus blogs or forums are documented in the regular plan, so neither as an add-on nor only in the Enterprise plan. Social listening is not required. But we do not include a tool whose listening can only be booked as an add-on, because the monitoring then depends on the extra module. Prices are public. And you can test the tool for free, or there is a free plan.
Since this rule of 16 October 2026, classic web monitoring such as Google Alerts belongs here too. If the facts change, the list changes automatically. The order follows the monitoring score from our methodology. Google Alerts meets only a few checkpoints there, such as real-time alerts and the German interface.
That makes this page the self-service entry point: a brand monitoring tool you can use without a sales call. The broad overview including enterprise suites is at the social media monitoring tools. Not sure what you need? The tool finder asks about your requirements.
