IN SHORT

Buffer is a social media tool for scheduling and publishing posts, with analytics, a comment inbox and a link-in-bio page. It targets small businesses, creators and agencies. For teams in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the English web interface and hosting in the USA are the most important limitations. According to the pricing page, there is a free plan, and paid plans start at 5 USD per channel and month when paid annually (as of October 2026).

If you search for “Buffer social media”, you almost always mean the scheduling tool Buffer from the US vendor Buffer, Inc. This fact check relies only on publicly documented information from Buffer’s pricing page, legal page and help centre, retrieved on 13 October 2026. There is no hands-on test. Whatever no source documents, we mark as open. The score table below this text shows which check points are met.

What is Buffer?

Buffer is a social media management tool that you use to schedule, publish and analyse posts for several networks. The vendor is Buffer, Inc., with a business address in San Francisco; according to the terms of use, the team works fully remotely. According to its own About page, Buffer was founded in 2010. For agencies and companies with several brands, the pricing page points to channel groups, which let you bundle channels by brand or client.

The most striking feature is the pricing model. Buffer bills per connected channel, meaning per profile or page you connect. If you connect three profiles, you pay for three channels. From the 11th channel, the price per channel drops according to the pricing page. The link-in-bio page “Start Page” also counts as a separate channel.

What can Buffer do?

According to the pricing page, Buffer covers four areas: scheduling and publishing, analytics, community management for comments and a link-in-bio page. The most important documented functions and their limits:

AreaAvailable according to BufferLimit according to source
SchedulingVisual content calendar, AI assistant in all plans, CSV bulk uploadBulk upload not for YouTube
NetworksThe major networks plus Bluesky, Mastodon and SubstackYouTube Shorts only
CommunityCommunity inbox for commentsno direct messages
AnalyticsAnalyses, export as CSV, PDF or MarkdownExport from Essentials
TeamApproval workflows, custom access rightsTeam plan only
TechnologyAPI with MCP server, apps for iOS and AndroidFree plan with 1 API key

According to the help centre, bulk upload lets you upload up to 100 posts per file, 10 in the free plan. The community inbox collects comments from Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, X, TikTok and YouTube, among others. As integrations, the pricing page names Canva, Google Drive, Dropbox, Zapier, Make and WordPress, among others, plus connections to ChatGPT and Claude. The API is already available in the free plan with 1 key and 3,000 requests per month.

What Buffer lacks, the vendor says itself: in its comparison with Sprout Social, Buffer lists social listening and competitor benchmarking as not available. The same page calls the inbox a tool for comments, without direct messages.

Who is Buffer for, and who is it not for?

Buffer suits individuals, small businesses and small agencies who want to schedule posts for many networks and can work with an English interface. Billing per channel keeps small set-ups cheap, and in the Team plan additional team members cost nothing extra according to the pricing page. If your team builds automations, you can reach the data via the API even in the free plan.

Buffer is less suitable for you if

  • your team should answer direct messages in the same tool,
  • you want to monitor mentions of your brand or competitors,
  • all employees need a German interface,
  • your data protection rules require hosting in the EU,
  • you want to schedule long YouTube videos.

For monitoring you need a second tool, because Buffer itself lists social listening as not available.

How much does Buffer cost?

Buffer costs nothing in the free plan, and according to the pricing page paid plans start at 5 USD per channel and month when paid annually, or 6 USD when paid monthly (as of October 2026). So Buffer prices apply per channel; with every additional profile the amount rises.

According to the pricing page, the free plan covers up to 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel and 1 user. There is a 14-day trial for the paid plans, after which the account automatically switches to the free plan. Buffer only shows prices in USD and gives November 2025 as its own pricing date. Business customers pay via reverse charge without VAT. The page is inconsistent about the discount for annual payment: the FAQ names 20 %, while the price box speaks of two months saved. All plans in detail are in the pricing table further down.

Data protection and DACH: where is the data stored, is Buffer available in German?

According to the legal page, Buffer hosts on Amazon Web Services in the USA and bases data transfers on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses. A data protection agreement (DPA) is linked on the same page, and the list of sub-processors is public. The legal page mentions no option for hosting in the EU.

The legal page names no security certifications such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001. That is not documented, but it does not automatically mean there are none.

Buffer is weak on language. According to the help centre, the web app and the iOS app are only in English, and the web app has no language selection. The Android app is available in German, among other languages, from version 9.4.0. Buffer does not say which languages its email support answers in.

Our assessment

Based on the documented facts, Buffer is an affordable, broadly connected scheduler for small set-ups and a weak choice for teams with high demands on monitoring, data location or language. The strengths are concrete: free plan, billing per channel, API even in the free plan and networks such as Bluesky, Mastodon and Substack.

The limits are just as concrete. No direct messages in the inbox, no social listening, web interface only in English and hosting in the USA. If you work in a company where data protection has a say, have the data protection agreement checked in advance. For freelancers and small teams, the free plan is the simplest way to find out whether the English interface gets in the way day to day. The deciding factor is usually whether your team needs to answer direct messages in the same tool.

How the score is calculated

The score is not a hands-on test verdict. It counts which checkpoints of methodology v1.4 are documented with a source for Buffer. “Not documented” means we found no evidence, not necessarily that the feature is missing. Read the methodology

It also includes the AI assistant and an API key. You can test the paid plans for 14 days, after which the account automatically falls back to the free plan.

Does Buffer comply with the GDPR?

Whether Buffer is GDPR-compliant for your company is for you to check; we give no legal assessment. What the legal page documents: Buffer provides a data protection agreement, hosts on Amazon Web Services in the USA and bases transfers on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses. The legal page names no security certifications such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001.

Where is Buffer data stored?

According to the legal page, Buffer hosts on Amazon Web Services in the USA. The legal page mentions no option for hosting in the EU. Buffer bases transfers from the EU on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses. A data protection agreement is linked, and the list of sub-processors is publicly available.

Is Buffer available in German?

According to the help centre, Buffer's web app is only available in English, and there is no language selection. The iOS app is in English too. Only the Android app is available in German, among other languages, from version 9.4.0. Buffer does not say whether support answers in German. In the browser, your only option is automatic translation.

Where is the vendor of Buffer based?

The vendor is Buffer, Inc., with a business address in San Francisco, USA. According to the terms of use, the team works fully remotely. According to its own About page, Buffer was founded in 2010. Buffer names no office or contact person in Germany, Austria or Switzerland; support runs by email and through the help centre.

Which networks does Buffer support?

According to the pricing page, Buffer publishes to Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, Google Business, Threads and Bluesky, plus Mastodon and Substack. On YouTube only Shorts are possible. Buffer only handles Instagram personal profiles and Facebook groups via reminders, which you then post yourself. Each connected channel costs extra in the paid plans.

Who is Buffer suitable for?

Buffer suits individuals, small businesses and small agencies who schedule posts for many networks and can work with an English interface. Billing per channel keeps small set-ups cheap. Buffer fits less well if you need social listening, direct messages in the inbox, a German interface or hosting in the EU.

Can I answer comments with Buffer?

Yes, according to the pricing page Buffer's community inbox collects comments on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, X, TikTok, Google Business, YouTube and Mastodon. According to Buffer's own comparison with Sprout Social, it does not manage direct messages. If you want to handle private messages as a team, you have to keep doing that in the networks' apps.

Does Buffer have approval workflows?

Yes, but according to the pricing page only in the Team plan. There you also set individual access rights and invite an unlimited number of team members without a per-user surcharge. Free and Essentials have no approvals, and Essentials is also limited to 1 user. For agencies with client approvals, the Team plan is therefore the starting point.

Can I schedule many posts at once in Buffer?

Yes, according to the help centre Buffer has a bulk upload via CSV file per channel. In the free plan you upload up to 10 posts per upload, in the paid plans up to 100. Bulk upload does not work for YouTube. You then see scheduled posts in the visual content calendar, which is available in all plans.

Does Buffer have an API?

Yes, according to the pricing page Buffer has an API in all plans, in the free plan with 1 key and 3,000 requests per month. There is also an MCP server through which AI assistants access your account. As integrations, Buffer names Canva, Zapier, Make, n8n, WordPress, ChatGPT and Claude, among others. So you do not have to switch to a paid plan for automations.

Does Buffer have a link-in-bio page?

Yes, with Start Page you get a link-in-bio page in all plans according to the pricing page. However, it counts as a channel: in the free plan it takes up one of the 3 channels, and in the paid plans it costs the normal channel fee. A custom domain only works via a redirect at the registrar. Buffer describes inconsistently whether there are click statistics.

Can Buffer do social listening?

No, according to Buffer's own comparison with Sprout Social, social listening is not part of the feature set, and neither is competitor benchmarking. The community inbox collects comments on the connected channels, but not direct messages. Buffer focuses on scheduling, publishing and analysing your own channels. For brand monitoring you need a separate monitoring tool.

What are the alternatives to Buffer?

Which Buffer alternative fits depends on what you are missing: a German interface, hosting in the EU, direct messages in the inbox or social listening. Further down this page you will find three alternatives that score best under our methodology, each with its own fact check. More options by need are on the page Buffer alternatives.
