IN SHORT

Meltwater is a platform for media monitoring and social listening that brings online news, print, TV, radio, podcasts and social networks together in one tool. It suits PR and communications teams that want to monitor traditional media and social media together. For small teams, fixed terms and the lack of a trial are hurdles. A DPA, servers in Europe and several ISO certificates are documented. According to the pricing page, Meltwater only gives prices on request, and contracts usually run for 12 months (as of October 2026).

What is Meltwater?

Meltwater is media intelligence software, meaning media monitoring, social listening and media relations, extended with influencer marketing and social media management. For the German-speaking market, the legal notice names Meltwater Deutschland GmbH, based in Berlin. According to its about page, Meltwater was founded in 2001.

The documents give the group’s headquarters inconsistently, so we only name the German company here.

According to the pricing page, the platform includes media intelligence, social listening, AI visibility measurement, media relations and influencer marketing. For planning and inbox there is the Engage module. We rate Meltwater in both pillars, monitoring and management, so the page shows two scores.

What can Meltwater do?

Meltwater is above all a media monitoring tool with very broad source coverage. According to the media monitoring product page, it covers over 200 million online publications, over 400,000 newspapers, magazines and trade titles, thousands of TV and radio stations worldwide and over 20,000 podcasts.

AreaWhat the sources document
Social listeningover 20 networks, including X, Meta, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, Reddit, Bluesky, Threads
SearchBoolean operators AND, OR, NOT, phrases, wildcards
AnalysisAI sentiment, AI summaries with the Mira assistant
Alertsreal-time alerts by email or Slack with custom thresholds
AI visibilityGenAI Lens, in all plans according to the pricing page
Managementcalendar, approvals, inbox and reports in the Engage module
IntegrationsSlack, Microsoft Teams, mobile apps for iOS and Android

According to the social media monitoring product page, Meltwater monitors in over 240 languages and more than 200 countries. On Meta platforms, the tool only captures publicly available data. Meltwater does not say how far back the historical data goes. According to the product page, alerts also trigger on negative spikes in sentiment. For precise searches, the Meltwater blog also mentions field operators such as title: and ingress:.

The Engage management module is less well documented than the monitoring. According to Meltwater Academy, you plan posts in a calendar view and send them for approval. According to the Meltwater blog, AI helps with writing captions, plus centralised inboxes and customisable dashboards. In the App Store, the Engage app lists Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, YouTube and TikTok. Whether you can assign inbox messages to individual team members is not documented.

Who is Meltwater for, and who is it not for?

Meltwater suits PR departments, communications teams and agencies that need to analyse press reviews, broadcast, podcasts and social media together. According to the product page, print with over 400,000 titles and over 20,000 podcasts are part of the same platform.

According to the pricing page, there is a separate Agency plan for agencies with several clients. If you also want to measure how brands appear in AI answers, the pricing page says you get GenAI Lens in every plan. Corporations with high security requirements will find documented ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II certificates.

Meltwater is less suitable if you have a small budget or want to try it out first. According to the pricing page, there is no free trial, and contracts usually run for 12 months. According to the pricing page, API, influencer marketing and permissions only come with Enterprise or Agency. If you mainly want to plan posts and answer comments, social media scheduling tools offer options with public prices.

How much does Meltwater cost?

According to the pricing page, Meltwater does not publish a price list and calculates prices individually. There are four plans, Starter, Pro, Enterprise and Agency, all on request. So if you search for Meltwater pricing or Meltwater costs, you only get a figure through sales.

According to the pricing page, contracts usually run annually with a 12-month minimum term. With Enterprise, a one-off implementation fee may be added. For your budget, that means: plan for an annual commitment and get quotes for at least two plans so you can see the gap between Starter and Pro.

According to the pricing page, even Starter includes media intelligence, social listening, AI visibility, media relations, alerts and preconfigured dashboards. Pro adds competitive benchmarking, and Enterprise brings influencer marketing, API and permissions. Instead of a trial, there is a free demo and interactive product tours. The plans are summarised in the plan overview, as of October 2026.

Data protection and DACH: servers, DPA, language

According to the subprocessor list, Meltwater runs its media intelligence platform in Europe: on AWS in Ireland and Germany, at Basefarm in Norway and on Microsoft Azure in Northern Europe. Other parts of the platform such as Radarly or Owler are partly outside the EU, and transfers to Meltwater News US Inc. run via the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.

A data processing agreement is available as a Data Processing Addendum. According to its own press release, Meltwater is certified to ISO 27001, ISO 27701, ISO 42001 and SOC 2 Type II.

A German interface is not directly documented; according to the help pages, the language can be set in your profile. German-language support is not documented either. According to the pricing page, 24/7 support via live chat, email and help centre is documented for all customers.

For teams in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, this means: servers in Europe are documented for the core of the media monitoring. Which modules you use helps decide whether data goes to the USA; ask about this specifically before signing.

Our assessment

By our methodology, Meltwater is a media monitoring and listening tool for communications teams whose strength is source breadth across online, print, broadcast and podcasts. The security certificates and the predominantly European data location are well documented.

What you need to weigh up are the hurdles before signing: no public prices, no trial and a minimum term of 12 months. The Engage management module is much more thinly documented in the sources than the monitoring.

For PR teams in DACH, Meltwater is an option when print, broadcast and podcasts are part of the must-haves. If you only monitor social networks, you pay for source breadth you will hardly use.

On OMR Reviews, Meltwater stands at 4.0 out of 5 stars from 30 reviews (retrieved on 13.10.2026). This does not feed into our score. If you want to work out whether you need media monitoring at this depth, the tool finder helps.

How the score is calculated

The score is not a hands-on test verdict. It counts which checkpoints of methodology v1.4 are documented with a source for Meltwater. “Not documented” means we found no evidence, not necessarily that the feature is missing. Read the methodology

Questions about Meltwater

Is Meltwater free?

No, according to the pricing page Meltwater has neither a free plan nor a free trial to try out yourself. Instead, the vendor offers a free demo and interactive product tours. Ideally, get quotes for two plans to judge the differences.
