How much do Buffer and Later cost in comparison?

With few people and many profiles Later is cheaper according to the pricing pages, with few channels Buffer is the cheaper one. The figures apply with annual billing in US dollars per month, as of October 2026:

TierBuffer (per channel)Later (per plan)
FreeFree: 3 channels, 1 userFree: 1 social set, 1 user, not advertised
EntryEssentials 5 USD, 1 userStarter 18.75 USD, 8 profiles, 1 user
Approvals fromTeam 10 USD, unlimited usersGrowth 37.50 USD, 16 profiles, 2 users
LargerVolume discount from 11 channelsScale 82.50 USD, 48 profiles, 4 users

Two worked examples with list prices: 1 person with 8 profiles pays 8 × 5 USD, so 40 USD, for Buffer Essentials and 18.75 USD for Later Starter. A team of 3 people with 10 channels and approvals pays 100 USD for Buffer Team and, for Later Growth, 37.50 USD plus 3.75 USD for the third user, so 41.25 USD.

Watch the limits: according to its pricing page, Later Starter allows 30 posts per profile, Buffer Essentials unlimited posts. Later does not show prices for monthly billing; Buffer names 6 and 12 USD per channel with monthly billing. You can try both tools for 14 days each.

Which tool is better for teams and approvals?

According to its pricing page, Later is cheaper for small teams and Buffer for large teams, because the Team plan includes unlimited members at no extra charge. Buffer has approval workflows only in the Team plan, along with individual access rights. According to its pricing page, Later has the approval workflow from Growth and, according to its help centre, unlimited access groups and a shareable calendar with notes and comments.

At Later the price grows with every person: Growth includes 2 users, and according to the pricing page each additional one costs 3.75 USD a month. At Buffer it grows with every channel.

For client reports, according to its pricing page Buffer has branded reports in the Team plan and exports as CSV, PDF or Markdown from Essentials. According to its help centre, Later shares the performance report as a link; a PDF comes only through the browser’s print function, and scheduled email reports come only in Scale. Assigning messages to team members is documented for neither. According to its help centre, Later names single sign-on only for the legacy Enterprise plan; for Buffer, SSO is not documented.

Buffer or Later: which networks and how much listening?

Buffer or Later: on networks Buffer covers more according to its pricing page, while only Later has something on offer for listening. According to its pricing page, Buffer supports Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, TikTok, Pinterest, Threads, Bluesky and the Google Business Profile, plus Mastodon and Substack. According to its help centre, Later has no longer posted to X since 28 August 2025 and supports neither Bluesky nor the Google Business Profile. YouTube is available in both only as Shorts.

In its own comparison, Buffer lists social listening and competitor comparisons as not available. In the Scale plan, Later has brand mentions for Instagram and TikTok, sentiment analysis over 90 days and competitive benchmarking for up to 20 competitors, on Instagram only. According to the sources, neither tool covers news sites, blogs or forums, nor mentions on Facebook or LinkedIn. For that you need a separate tool from the social media monitoring tools.

What about data protection and GDPR?

According to their own statements, Buffer and Later store data in the USA; we give no legal assessment. According to its legal page, Buffer hosts with Amazon Web Services in the USA and bases transfers on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses. The Data Protection Agreement and the list of sub-processors are linked publicly there.

According to its privacy notice, Later stores personal data in the USA and transfers EU data through standard contractual clauses. We could not document a data processing agreement for Later; the trust page was not reachable. Neither vendor names certificates such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001 on the pages checked.

Later is inconsistent about the provider: the terms of service name Victory Square Media Inc. from Vancouver, the privacy notice Mavrck LLC in Boston. Buffer is based in San Francisco. How we weight data protection is explained in the methodology.

Buffer vs Later: who is each tool for?

Buffer suits freelancers and teams that post on many networks, including X, Bluesky, Mastodon or the Google Business Profile. According to its pricing page, the free plan with 3 channels is enough to start, and growing teams pay per channel instead of per head. If you want to automate, you get the API including an MCP server for free. Expect an English web interface.

Later fits creators, brands and small agencies focused on Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest that look after many profiles with few people. The German desktop interface, link in bio without Later branding and an inbox with DMs from Growth speak in its favour. If you have to post on X, Later is ruled out as an option.

If neither tool fits, the Buffer alternatives, the Later alternatives and the overview of social media scheduling tools can help you choose.
