Brandwatch vs Meltwater: how do the two tools differ?
Brandwatch and Meltwater differ above all in focus: Brandwatch puts social listening and consumer research at the centre, Meltwater media intelligence. Brandwatch describes its core product Consumer Research as a tool for researchers and analysts, according to the one-pager with over 100 million online sources and around half a billion new posts per day. Meltwater calls itself a media intelligence platform and, according to the product page, covers over 200 million online publications, newspapers, magazines, broadcast and podcasts.
Both have a second pillar for social media management. Brandwatch has scheduling, approvals, an inbox with WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, and ad management. With Engage, Meltwater has a calendar, approvals and a central inbox. Both have influencer features: Brandwatch sells search across 30 million+ influencers as a separate product, Meltwater includes influencer marketing in the Enterprise and Agency plans.
So the question Brandwatch or Meltwater depends on which sources you need and what for. Brandwatch is based in London through Runtime Collective Limited; Meltwater has a company in Berlin, Meltwater Deutschland GmbH, and according to its own website was founded in 2001. More in the Brandwatch fact check and the Meltwater fact check.
Which tool covers print, TV, radio and podcasts?
According to the vendors, Meltwater covers all four classic media types in the core product; with Brandwatch, print is an add-on and podcasts are not documented. The documented figures, as of October 2026:
| Source | Brandwatch | Meltwater |
|---|---|---|
| Online news | online and offline news sources | over 200 million online publications |
| add-on only (print and paywall) | over 400,000 newspapers, magazines, trade titles | |
| TV and radio | almost 3,000 stations in more than 15 languages | all 210 US media markets, thousands of stations worldwide |
| Podcasts | not documented | over 20,000 podcasts |
| Review sites | thousands, incl. Google Reviews, Trustpilot | included in the online publications according to the FAQ |
For media monitoring, Meltwater is therefore the broader package. According to the Media Monitoring page, print is part of the scope; with Brandwatch, according to the one-pager, it comes only as a paid add-on. Both deliver broadcast: on its data diversity page, Brandwatch names almost 3,000 TV and radio stations directly in Consumer Research, Meltwater thousands of stations worldwide, with no figure for Europe.
Neither vendor documents whether individual Austrian or German newspapers and stations are included. In the demo, ask specifically about your key media, about regional titles and whether paywalled articles are captured in full text or only as a teaser. With Brandwatch, it is also worth asking what the print add-on costs. You will find an overview of specialist vendors under media monitoring.
Which tool is better for social listening and analysis?
For deep social analysis, Brandwatch has more documented features; Meltwater scores with its breadth of networks and languages. According to the one-pager, Brandwatch has firehose access to X, Tumblr and Reddit, recognises logos, objects, scenes and actions in images, and segments by sentiment and emotion. Search supports operators such as NEAR/x; history goes back to 2008 according to the product page, to 2010 according to the one-pager. You can upload your own survey and support data and analyse it together with online data. If a website is missing, Brandwatch adds it within 72 hours, according to the one-pager.
According to the product page, Meltwater listens on over 20 networks, including TikTok, LinkedIn, Bluesky and Threads, in over 240 languages. Meta data is available only where it is public. Real-time alerts go out by email or Slack, with your own thresholds. Image recognition is not documented for Meltwater, and the vendor does not state the period of its history.
Both have real-time alerts; at Brandwatch they are called Signals. Both also have AI summaries: Iris AI at Brandwatch, Mira at Meltwater. According to the pricing page, Meltwater measures visibility in AI answers in all plans, Brandwatch through the separate product Trajaan.
How much do Brandwatch and Meltwater cost in comparison?

What about data protection and GDPR?
According to their own information, both vendors process data partly in the EU and partly outside, so the data location is mixed. At Brandwatch, according to the security page, Consumer Research processes data on AWS in the USA, the frontend runs on GCP in Europe, and analysis results are held in a data centre in Hayes in the United Kingdom. Social Media Management runs on AWS and GCP in the EU, only the Listen module in the USA and the United Kingdom.

Who is each tool suited to?
Brandwatch suits insights, market research and social teams that want to analyse large volumes of social data, evaluate images and bring in their own data sets. If you need print, plan the add-on in from the start. If you also schedule and reply on social media, you can add Social Media Management, which according to the security page runs mostly in the EU.
Meltwater fits PR and communications departments and agencies that want to monitor press, broadcast, podcasts and social media in one tool and need real-time alerts. There is a separate plan for agencies. Plan for the 12-month commitment; in return, according to the pricing page, there is 24/7 support.
