Brandwatch vs Talkwalker: how do the two tools differ?
Brandwatch and Talkwalker are both enterprise tools for social listening, but they differ in scope. According to the pricing page, Brandwatch sells three solutions: Consumer Research for listening, Social Media Management and Influencer Marketing. Talkwalker is a pure listening and analysis tool without publishing and without an inbox; according to the pricing page, management comes from the parent company Hootsuite.
Ownership has changed too. According to its home page, Talkwalker is now called “Lumen by Talkwalker” and belongs to Hootsuite; the acquisition was announced on 8 April 2024. It is still sold separately with its own pricing page. Hootsuite also calls its own listening module Lumen, so keep the two apart in your research.
Both have influencer features, but packaged differently. Brandwatch sells search across 30 million+ influencers as a separate product, Influence; according to the media monitoring page, Talkwalker has an Influencer Finder that also finds journalists and publications.
For the question Brandwatch or Talkwalker, the registered office plays a role: Brandwatch operates through Runtime Collective Limited in London, Talkwalker through Talkwalker S.à r.l. in Luxembourg. Details on both are in the Brandwatch fact check and the Talkwalker fact check.
Which tool covers more sources?
Both cover social media, news, blogs, forums and review sites; the differences lie in broadcast, podcasts and print. The vendors’ figures can only be compared roughly, because they count differently.
| Source | Brandwatch | Talkwalker |
|---|---|---|
| Scope according to vendor | over 100 million online sources | 30+ networks, 150+ million websites, 187 languages |
| Social | firehose for X, Tumblr and Reddit | unsampled results |
| Review sites | thousands, incl. Google Reviews, Trustpilot | 300+ |
| add-on (print and paywall) | through partners in the Marketplace, base scope unclear | |
| TV and radio | almost 3,000 stations in more than 15 languages | broadcast add-on |
| Podcasts | not documented | documented |
Broadcast is part of Consumer Research at Brandwatch, according to the data diversity page with almost 3,000 TV and radio stations. At Talkwalker, TV and radio come as a broadcast add-on for Europe, North America and APAC from the Marketplace.
Talkwalker covers podcasts according to its social listening page; for Brandwatch they are not documented. Print is an extra with both: according to the one-pager, Brandwatch calls it an add-on, and Talkwalker connects print content through partners such as Argus Data Insights and Cision.
Neither vendor documents whether your Austrian or German key media are included. Ask about this specifically in the demo. You will find specialist vendors under media monitoring.
Which tool is better for analysis and AI features?
For long look-backs and your own data sets, Brandwatch has more documented features; Talkwalker brings AI visibility and report formats more widely into its plans. Brandwatch goes back to 2008 according to the product page, to 2010 according to the one-pager. On its own comparison page, Talkwalker names 13 months, up to five years at extra cost. According to the product page, you can upload survey and support data only with Brandwatch.
Both analyse images. According to the one-pager, Brandwatch recognises objects, actions, scenes and logos; Talkwalker recognises logos in images and videos. Search is Boolean with both; Brandwatch names operators such as NEAR/x, and according to the comparison page Talkwalker helps configure the queries during onboarding.
AI summaries come with Iris AI at Brandwatch and with Wisdom plus an AI agent at Talkwalker. According to the pricing page, Talkwalker measures visibility in AI answers with LLM Insights from the Core plan, Brandwatch through the separate product Trajaan. Only Talkwalker documents exports as PDF, CSV, XLS and PPTX and white-label reports.
For sentiment, Brandwatch segments by mood and emotion according to the one-pager; according to the vendor, Talkwalker also recognises simple forms of sarcasm. Both alert you in real time: through Signals at Brandwatch, and at Talkwalker for crises, sentiment changes and trends.

Brandwatch and Talkwalker publish no prices; both sell through a demo with an individual quote. According to the pricing page, Brandwatch names plans from Standard to Enterprise per solution, Talkwalker the three plans Core, Analyze and Business.
At Brandwatch, only the demo is free. Talkwalker provides the extra tools Talkwalker Alerts and Free Social Search for free; whether there is a trial version of the platform is contradictory, because the comparison page names a free trial and the pricing page only a demo.
Expect extra items with both. At Brandwatch, print is an add-on and SSO in Consumer Research a premium feature; at Talkwalker, broadcast and longer history cost extra, and the API is a separate product. According to the terms of service, Talkwalker contracts renew automatically for one year, and you have to cancel 60 days in advance. Request both quotes with the same list of sources.
What about data protection and GDPR?
With both, the data location is mixed, but the distribution differs clearly. At Brandwatch, according to the security page, Consumer Research processes the listening data on AWS in the USA, the frontend runs on GCP in Europe, and analysis results are held in Hayes in the United Kingdom. Who is each tool suited to?
Brandwatch suits insights and market research teams that want to analyse social data over long periods, bring in their own data sets and follow TV and radio without an extra product. If you need scheduling and an inbox from the same vendor, add Social Media Management. The one-pager also documents analysis of review sites such as Amazon or Glassdoor.
Talkwalker fits communications and agency teams that want to bring many people into listening without a seat limit, monitor podcasts and AI answers and have their contracting party in the EU. If you already use Hootsuite, Talkwalker keeps you in the same group; for publishing, Hootsuite is an option, see the Hootsuite fact check.
